520 . ‡a"When Dan Scoville was made deputy in Delta, he knew he was in for a tough time. His predecessor had left town in a hurry and Cole Logan, the biggest rancher in the area, hated to be told what to do. Logan had always run things in Delta as he pleased. Dan Scoville had hardly taken over when he spoiled Logan's plans to have a meek little man beaten by his henchmen . . . and Logan angrily warned Dan to get out of Delta and never interfere again. Dan stayed and soon discovered that cattle had been disappearing from ranches next to Logan's and there were a good many old mysteries around that had never been solved or properly investigated. It looked as if Cole Logan and his sadistic brother, Rack, were willing to overlook almost anything -- even murder -- if their ends were served. Then, as Dan began to untangle the threads of suspicion and terror that ensnarled the county, he found that the knots had been tied by a mysterious and sinister hand. As the puzzle started to loosen, Dan's danger increased until he was suddenly thrown into a blazing showdown -- which taught him who his real friends were, and brought law once and for all to Delta."-- ‡cProvided by publisher.
