While traveling back to London, Martin Cambden Willesden, the Earl of Merton, responds to cries of distress and rescues an obviously well-bred lady from her would-be kidnappers. Martin offers to escort her back to London, but in the interest of preserving her reputation, the lady declines to give him her name, leading him to dub her his "fair Juno." Once they are back in London, Martin resolves to put any and all romantic thoughts of his fair Juno aside. But when he accepts an invitation to dinner with friends, he discovers that one of the guests, Helen Walford, is none other than his Juno. With its impeccably crafted characters and expertly evoked historical setting, Laurens' (The Designs of Lord Randolph Cavanaugh, 2018) 1994 novel demonstrates her mastery of the Regency romance.
