Reviews

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2020 February #2
How to turn a traditional quilt pattern like drunkard's path into a very contemporary, somewhat offbeat hanging? Or reimagine the staid, often-boring sawtooth squares pattern into a well-described "Left of Center" textile? Maxwell (Morse Code Quilts, 2019) makes traditional quilting bolder with fabrics, color, and a juxtaposition of perspective that will give any quilt a definitive edge. Each of the 14 quilts laid out here contains more than enough diagrams, charts, color photographs, instructions, and, when appropriate, templates to copy (primarily for experienced sewers). Maxwell's instruction stands out in its encouragements to veer from the original via four sidebars: Confidence Booster suggests ideas for a trial run (say, sewing one block or cutting only parts of all fabric required). Leap of Faith promotes different methods of piecing. Color Lessons, of course, examines specific hues and combinations, while Fearless Takeaways plays with overall pattern and looks at alternatives. Creativity unchained. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
