Reviews

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2020 January #1
The Guardian Ministry works to free wrongly convicted criminals from life sentences. It's head is Cullen Post, a lawyer who turned Episcopal priest after he left a public defender practice due to a nervous breakdown. Back practicing law, Post sees the ministry as a second chance, a way to combine two worlds and make his life and work worthwhile. A key client is Quincy Miller, who has been in prison for 22 years for the supposed murder of his divorce lawyer. As Post delves into Miller's case, he discovers links to a drug cartel. Reader Beck gives Post a comfortable Georgia accent and shifts easily into Southern Black vernacular and slightly higher feminine voices when needed. Tracking down former witnesses and piecing together old cases takes time, and the narrative is slow-paced but involving. Beck keeps the listener interested with nicely voiced characters and a steady rhythm. Grisham is a pro, of course, and fans who enjoy the gritty background as much as the courtroom drama will enjoy his latest. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
